second last week at work...

let me summarise my week...

not a good week... mixture of sadness, disappointment, misery, stress and emptiness...

stress at work is inevitable... But i'm thankful that HR and boss recognises my effort and voiced their appreciation of my efforts out to me... but with such compliments comes greater responsibilities and pressure (mostly self-imposed) as i noe that they view me as equals with adults though i'm still an intern...

nevertheless this coming sat will be my last day... I'll end it off with a BBQ at my mentor's house... So long din get to see Adrienne and Sheila! Missed crapping with them...
n will miss u these 10 days...

Part II: Tasik Kenyir

Day 3:

A painting of nature

Charlie's Angels (neoprint background)

neighbours poking their heads out

Checked out in the morning and poof~ that was the end of the trip to paradise… We took the boat back to Merang Jetty and took a bus to Tasik Kenyir. The bus driver brought us to Kenyir Lakeview Resort, when we were actually supposed to go to Kenyir Lake Resort. We took loads of photos at Lakeview which is actually supposed to be a golf resort. It was sad that we couldn’t stay in the posh resort, but we paid much less, that’s why. We then took the buggy and took a boat to the resort. It was rather messy cuz the lady boss did not guide us there. So when we reached the place, we only got to know that we have 5 rooms. 2 pax per room. From far, the resort looked fine. But when we approached it, it was low-cost and rather dilapidated. It was just like another kelong. We were hungry after all the travelling. Besides it was already 2 plus in the afternoon and we had not have lunch. We couldn’t communicate well with the employee who spoke only Bahasa with a heavy Indonesian accent. Luckily the lady boss came and assured us that lunch will be ready soon.

The view at Tasik was pictureque. We were just like bathing in the rich colours. The lake is just like a magnified version of the quarries in Ubin. After all, Tasik Kenyir is half the size of Singapore. It's so big you call the pieces of land in the lake 'islands'.

After lunch we took a short walk to a rapid where the water was cold and the rocks was slippery. We sat down in a sittable area and began singing, or rather, shouting songs. First was familiar songs and HC songs and later we began singing National songs with zest. Every song is accompanied by splashing of the cold water, and every time it will start from PG. So fun!!!

The resort is run by this lady boss from KL. She lives with the Indonesian employee and her 3 sons. According to Yangyang who is only 6 years old, his Dad and older sister are both in KL. As ispeaks Cantonese, we began learning Cantonese from Sophia and Phyllis. But it seems like we are more proficient in scolding pple with Cantonese, like “lei oi sek si” and “lei ge si fat hou dai. Ngo hou gaeng!” Super lame…

The food here is much better than that at Redang Reef. We had fried fish (think it’s kim mang lor) for lunch, and for dinner we had steamed black fish (with flat head) and looks like a snakehead. It doesn’t look hard to catch, so I dun tink it’s a snakehead.

Day 4:

Woke up and managed to catch a little of the sunrise. After breakfast, we set off with Abang (Brother) to the dam run by Electrik Gaya Hidup Masa Kini (‘GO’ Electric). There was nothing much to do there, but crazy us took loads of photos there. We tried to do the SMU pose and attempted to capture ourselves jumping in air. Tze and I tried to stand on Wanling’s hands in the photo as well… As we tried to do piggy-back race, PG fell on the tar roads and scratched both her knees. Later Abang gave her 2 cloths for her to tie her wounds. Aww…

Later went to Lasir Waterfall. At first we just sat on the rocks and took photos, but Abang actually walked to the waterfall to show us how to play. Haha… Then we stayed under the rushing waters from the waterfall. It was cold but shiok! When we tried to shake our heads in the water, Nini lost her specs. Tsktsk… Luckily she still has her contacts.

Next was a visit to Taman Herba, which is Herbal Park. We went there to feed the mozzies. So in order to replace the blood lost, we drank Kacip Fatimah which is good for girls. There’s also Tongkat Ali for men. Abang merely said it’s for energy, but can guess it’s good for guys cuz can “zhuang yang”. Muahaha…

On our way back to the resort, Nini dropped her cap on the waters. Tsktsk. The boat had to gostan and I picked up the cap for her.

Tasik view

Nighttime was madness karaoke session. We sang till some time before 12 mn and the climax was “Larger Than Life” when Phyllis, Moomoo, Nini and I went mad and sang it with so much enthusiasm. Pple can juz be so crazy when they are tired.

After a discussion about the next day’s activities, we went out in the open to look at stars. Jingwen saw a shooting star first, and was so excited that she forgot to make a wish. Then I saw another! It’s so weird that I tried looking for shooting stars in Singapore and Ubin, but have never seen any b4. Then I saw another. Woo~

Day 6:

Brushing our teeth!

B4 setting off to land, we walked to the rapid once again to take pictures and got ourselves all sweaty and smelly. When we reached KT, the streets were rather empty. The shops were all closed! We walked to the state mosque which is white in colour and does not look extremely impressive from the outside. Right beside it is the Istana which is made from limestone, egg yolk, coarse salt and honey. It’s not impressive either, and hard to believe the Sultan lives there. As we walked, we noticed that guys will blow whistles at us. We were quite dressed actually. All of us wore, at the least, berms and T-shirt. Think Trengganu is really a very conservative place. Lunch was at Restoran Istimewa Puteri. Well, dinner was at the same place too, since not many shops were open, unless u count KFC and Pizza Hut in.

We walked to Pasar Payang and it’s just like any other wet market, and then we continued walking to Chinatown. Finally, we found some shops open and found out from the auntie that Friday is holiday for pple in Trengganu. Saw dead, dried and preserved puffer fish for sale in one of the shops as souvenirs. Quite gross actually. We spent about 2 hours in Chinatown just shopping in 3 shops! Madness.

Our next stop was at the “Orchard Rd” of Trengganu. Went to Vincci which sells bracelets and necklaces aside shoes, Converse and Watsons. We then passed by the “Shenton Way” where many banks are located.

Basically, by the time we walked back it was time for dinner. Say Singapore is small, town in KT is worse. Chinatown, “Orchard Rd” and “Shenton Way” in Trengganu are so closely situated and of walkable distances from each other.

Without us noticing it, the trip soon came to an end. Will really miss the fun and craziness faking Indian accents, learning Canto, Hokkien and Malay… Miss the rich colours in Redang and Tasik Kenyir… Miss the marine creatures in Redang… Miss the sun and the sea… Goodbye paradise…

Part I: A Paradise - P. Redang...

Day 1:

We reached Kuala Trengganu at about 6 plus in the morning. A guy brought us by a small bus to the Ping Anchorage’s ‘Travellers’ Café’ which is just 2 streets away. We had to wait there and have breakfast until 8 am which the coach comes to bring us to Merang Jetty. Merang Jetty is quite dilapidated, at least the one that belongs to Redang Reef Resort. It’s rather low-cost and not well-maintained. We took this boat with about 20 Malaysians also going to Redang Reef Resort. We had to wear PFDs and the boat was very cramped. At first it was crawling out of the narrow river, but soon gained speed and was speeding on the more open waters. Redang was not that near as we could not see the island from mainland. When we approached Redang, it was surreal, heavenly and unbelievable. Maybe because I’ve never seen such clear, blue waters before. There were generally 3 different shades of blue in the Redang waters due to the different depths and “undergrowth” – diluted copper (II) sulphate, aqueous copper (II) sulphate and aqueous copper (II) hydroxide. The waters near the shore was of such light blue colour that it looked just like a swimming pool. It was so tempting, calling out to us to jump into it! Redang Reef Resort is the cheaper kind of resort. Laguna is right beside and more posh and of cuz more expensive. I shared a room with Wanling and Shuying. The room was a little sandy and had humongous mozzies in them.

blue waters!

swimming pool?

naked gals hanky-pankying

Started off with snorkeling after lunch. Had “starters” at the beach first. Saw sea cucumber and ‘nemo’s! Took a boat to another smaller island. It was so fun and such a unique experience to be swimming together with the fishes. Saw more ‘nemo’s, “ikan bilis”, colourful fishes, “ikan kuning”s and so many other kinds of fishes. We tried to reach out the touch the fishes but the fishes were quick to sense the vibration and swam away before I could touch them, thanks to their “lateral lines”.

Day 2:

Yet more snorkeling! Ooh… Went to Marine Park on Pulau Pinang in the morning. More fishes in the “aquarium” of different shapes and sizes and there were pomfrets too (or at least they look like pomfrets to me). It was funny how I communicated with Wanling in the water, when we saw a dead jellyfish being eaten by fishes. Then I used my finger to make the shape of a diamond and the eating action to tell her that I want to eat the pomfrets! My favourite edible fish ok! Even saw an eel. The instructors seem to know where the creatures’ homes are. “Sharkman” dangled a dead fish outside the entrance of the eel’s home, which is under a big black reef. The ugly eel wriggled out and attempted to take a bite of the fish, but “Sharkman” pulled it back and continued to lure it out for us to see. Soon it grew tired of not getting to eat the dead fish, and swam back to it dark dark home. On the way back to Pulau Redang, saw a turtle swimming away from our boat. So cute! We were so lucky to see the turtle! =)

There was another snorkeling trip in the afternoon in another snorkeling spot. Saw the same things – same kind of fishes and reefs. I think we saw so many of them in these two days that they don’t seem to fascinate us as much already. We were fed with such rich and natural colours and clear water that they don’t seem to surprise us that much already. But, it’s really so contrasting as compared to Singapore waters. Saw mushroom coral which is rather hard, though it looked slimy.

Went for another snorkeling trip after tea to see sharks. Of cuz we din see the great great white sharks. We merely saw the baby great white sharks. So cute though they still look carnivorous and fierce. Saw more clownfish! Clownfish are my favourite fish too! Saw a baby trigger fish, but I couldn’t catch sight of the baby barracuda. Saw eyecow seashell, which really looked like an eye. Later, “Sharkman” brought us to see stingrays. He went to kajiao the stingrays by poking their tails and they swam away in fright. Haha… They were camouflaged on the sand and it was not easy to notice them.

At night, we went out to the beach and tried to rub the sand for blue sand. At first, Nini and some others saw it while I did not. It was rather disappointing, but we continued to rub and rub and soon I saw 1, 2, 3… It was luminous and emitted blue light. It was unbelievable. The instructors told us that those were parts of corals or was it shellfish, and when we there’s warmth will emit light. So cool!!! We kept screaming each time we saw a blue sand, such that "Sharkman" teased us about and imitated our high-pitched screams.
The beauty can't be captured totally by our cameras but will be remembered for a lifetime in our memories...

READY TO GO!

well well.. last sat was farewell to some my colleagues/ friends... It's weird how the word "colleague" is used.. Cuz sometimes my colleagues are, strictly speaking, not my frens cuz i dun hang out with them or confide in them... But, yes, they are colleagues and friends to me... Sheila, Qinghan, Adrienne, Emily, Xinhui and Chui Khim... They all left on last Sat... So i'm one of the few interns left behind... Tink i'm considered the "most experienced" intern le.. But at least pple in my department are pretty young. So not so much of an age gap...

Last Sun was 03S68 gathering at lunch.. supposed to go for steamboat lunch, but the steamboat pple screwed things up and we ended up eating some pretty ex food at "Surf and Turf". Anyway, ate dinner with 4/9... Lindsay, Sherz, Yinting, Shuwen, Cuiqin, Peirong n Jasmine were there... A pretty fruitful gathering cuz, as usual, we had quite some gossips to share... n we took nice nice neoprints! =)

Mon went shopping with Shuying and Tze... Looking at how we spend money... relli quite scary.. But come to tink of it, we dun squander la.. So it's acheli very reasonable.. haha... den met the rest at JEC.. But Nini, JW and PG pangsei us... Anyway... there was some prob with our tics cuz someone from Transnasional acheli cheated the agency of the money. So our tics were fake ones... anyway the agency managed to settle things.. If not we'r gonna murder the idiot for ruining our plans manz..

Anyway, found more pple going to SMU! There's Vanessa, Peiling, Chui Khim and Shuwen so far... Shuying told me there's Qinlei and I may get to noe her there too... But I'll miss my frens in NUS and NTU and those overseas too man...

Tmr is the day! Pretty excited and I'm more or less done with my packing... Got a bit of inertia these few days man... Morn supposed to wake up n go jogging but couldn't overcome the inertia.. hmmm...

Yay~ wanna spend quality time with my dear frens man... when is there another chance like this? n i can get sun-baked too! Woo~~~ So excited!!!
